Michael Aldridge was an English actor and singer who was best known for his roles in the BBC television series The Avengers and the film adaptation of The Railway Children. He was born on 9 September 1920 in Glastonbury, Somerset, England, UK. Aldridge began his career as a stage actor, appearing in a number of plays in the West End of London. He made his film debut in the 1951 film The Magic Box. He went on to appear in a number of films, including The Cruel Sea (1953), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), and The Railway Children (1970). In 1961, Aldridge was cast in the role of John Steed in the BBC television series The Avengers. He played the role for four seasons, until 1965. He also appeared in a number of other television series, including The Saint, The Champions, and The Onedin Line. Aldridge was married to actress and singer Patricia Driscoll from 1956 until her death in 2002. He died on 14 April 2006 in London, England, at the age of 85.
