He then moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980s, where he worked on films such as The Terminator and The Abyss. In the late 1990s, Major returned to New Zealand to work on Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. He was the production designer for all three films, and won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for The Return of the King.
